Nicole Santoyo dot com: Observer resources
Welcome to my repository of observer resources. If you would like something added, or the file you are looking for is blocked by your boat's firewall, do not hesitate to contact me. I prioritize helping those at sea get the information they need very highly, so, as sincerely as I can possibly say it, do not feel bad about contacting me at odd times and on weekends.
If you spend any length of time around me, you'll have to deal with me going "hold on, let me get this real quick". I'm hoping that this will enable me (and y'all) to have some of those resources on hand more quickly, so I can pick up my gin and juice (or dangerously caffienated coffee, if I happen to be at sea myself) a little more expediently following a query.
If you are looking for things to do in Seattle, I have some suggestions for you. I also have some for Dutch Harbor.
Guides and Posters

This is your NMFS-issued general species ID guide, exclusive of rockfish, which is found below.
-

And this is your NMFS-issued rockfish guide. Have fun IDing :3c

A Working Field Guide to Trawl-Caught Animals based on D.W. Kessler's "Alaska's Saltwater Fishes and Other Sea Life" [self-hosted]
This is a pretty in-depth guide that includes color photographs of most fish you are likely to encounter in Alaska. Some photographs are identical to those in your fish ID guide, but many are different. Be warned, color fidelity of some images is not always perfect.
-
Photographic Guide of Pelagic Juvenile Rockfish (Sebastes spp.) and Other Fishes in Mid-water Trawl Surveys off the Coast of California [self-hosted]
While this is a west-coast guide, it still has plenty of great photographs of juvenile fish also found in Alaska, as well as deepsea species.
-
Survey Fishes: An Illustrated List of the Fishes Captured during the Northwest Fisheries Science Center's Fishery Resource Analysis and Monitoring Division's West Coast Surveys [self-hosted]
Of all of the items in my collection, this one not only has the longest name, but is also my favorite for the wonderful photography and diversity of fishes covered. A must-have for the Hake fishery, in my humble opinion.
-
Sea Stars of Alaska [self-hosted]
A set of 3 posters with photographs depicting many of the sea stars you'll find up north.
-
A Field Guide to Alaskan Corals [self-hosted]
Contains a dichotomous key and great photographs of corals, and handy for confirming whether your coral really does belong to the taxon you think it does.

Fishbase
I love FishBase. It has an overwhelming amount of information about most any fish you can think of. Generally includes lots of meristic and morphometric characteristics and distribution information for each species. Lots of nice pictures, too.
